Fire damages at J. & R. Motors on North Santa Fe
Fire crews were called at 6 02 a m to 1212 N Santa Fe to confront a blaze at J. & R. Motors. Chief Brennan noted cracked front windows and damage to the building and a late model car from heat. The fire is traced to a neon sign transformer. Alarm came from the Mid-America refinery across the highway.

In Gridley Kansas a truck overturned on the northwest edge killing 15 year old John Christy and injuring eight Gridley Rural High School students. The driver was among those in the cab with six others in the back. Six named youths received treatment at Coffey County Hospital for bruises and scratches. Gridley lies about thirty miles southeast of Emporia.

Emporia Kansas AP report states Lot Taylor agricultural extension specialist in animal husbandry at Kansas State University died of natural causes. Autopsy confirmed the death occurred in his car ten miles east of Emporia on Sunday.
