Air tour gives firsthand view of tornado damage near Toronto

Tribune photographer-reporter D. J. Wortman rode with pilot John Ferguson over Woodson County Monday night’s tornado path. They photographed the destruction from 1,000 feet then landed to document scenes at Crossfield and McGee homes north of Toronto. The McGee family survived, but suffered injuries and significant damage including a wrecked house and missing furnishings.

Eisenhower says no war actions without Congress approval

President Eisenhower asserted he would not order American troops into any action that could be read as war without prior congressional approval. He noted self defense in local actions is possible but would not constitute war, and stressed a go-ahead from Congress is essential. He referenced the Marines sent to the Middle East and linked war to funding and a draft law.

Grace Kelly told reporters aboard the Constitution that she hopes to have a large family after marrying the Prince of Monaco. Southeast Kansas officials form new county group

The Southeast Kansas Association of County Commissioners and County Engineers formed at the Memorial Building with Cary Pruitt as president and William Hill as secretary treasurer. Voters Approve Bond for Yates Center Pool

Yates Center voters approved an 85000 bond for a municipal swimming pool by a 411 to 247 margin. Humboldt had 120 total votes with four unopposed city council candidates. Freonia mayor J M Gilstrap was reelected with 159 of 170 votes.

Democrats captured 42 percent of the vote to Eisenhower's 55 percent, boosting Kefauver's hopes in the farm belt. Wisconsin delegates totaled 56 for Kefauver and 30 for Eisenhower with a one half vote each. rural districts in the 9th and 10th favored Kefauver while Eisenhower led elsewhere. The nonregistered voters could choose any ballot, making the primary a test of popularity between Kefauver and the President.

Carole Morris of Oak Grove School won the county spelling bee held at the district courtroom yesterday and will enter the state contest in Topeka on April 28. Elaine Livingston of Galesburg placed second with ten schools participating.

Chest X ray drive ends in Chanute and Midwest tornado toll

In Chanute Kansas 4338 people have had chest X rays as the state health board works with local volunteers to screen food handlers. Across ten states a series of tornadoes and windstorms killed at least 35 and injured over 300. Mississippi, Michigan, Wisconsin and others endured heavy damage with thousands left homeless. The Red Cross deployed hundreds of disaster workers to aid affected families.

Wheel theft leaves car with missing rear axles

Denver police report a theft where two rear wheels were stolen from a parked car. The thief left the spare wheel in the front seat and arranged four hub caps in a row on a nearby lawn, with no clear motive.
