The Board of Education approved blueprints for a new music room at Senior High, accepted two resignations, and approved contracts for eight new teachers. One teaching vacancy remains. Bids for construction will be opened April 24 at 7 p.m. at the high school.
Police logged additional vandalism reports including damage at Humboldt shelter house and a gas tank tampering incident. The Royster Junior High, Senior High and elementary posts saw resignations and new contracts for staff, with moves to transfer Helen Anderson and others. The board approved heating plant upgrades, choir robes, a typewriter contract, janitor raises, and golf course green fees while considering closing West Elm playground.
Robert A. Finney Humboldt Kansas Chamber of Commerce president outlines Hoover Report aims to save taxpayers 51 million annually. Proposals seek better DoD management, federal efficiency, private enterprise protection, veteran care, public health expansion, civil service improvement, and needle down waste in water and foreign aid.
Tornadoes wind storms and hail marked the season opener across Kansas with Topeka recording up to 2.48 inches of rain as a snowstorm blanketed the northwest up to eight inches. The forecast calls for generally fair conditions with diminishing winds and a warming trend by Wednesday. Temperature hurdles include lows near 40 in the southeast and 20 to 25 in the northwest, with Wednesday highs mostly in the 40s to 50s.
A county wide health program sponsored by the State Board of Health will be discussed at a Memorial building meeting at 7 30 p m on April 16. The aim is to educate the public on mental health to prevent illness with civic groups mothers clubs PTA groups and other organizations invited to send representatives. Rev Milton B Parrish of the Church of the Nazarene will preside as temporary chairman.
State Accident Records Section lists 144 traffic fatalities to date in 1956, for the last 24 hours none reported, compared with 121 fatalities in the same period in 1955, highlighting ongoing road danger trends.
Chest X ray pictures will be taken from 7 p m to 8 30 p m today at the Memorial Building. Wednesday’s schedule is 10 a m to 12 noon and 1 p m to 4 p m. The program, sponsored by the Kansas Board of Health and cooperating local groups, will continue through Friday.
Lawrence Magnus Broberg 65 of Newman Grove Nebraska was struck and killed by a car in Newton last night marking the town's first fatal crash since August 17 1953.
Mrs. Viola Franz Eastlick, 38, of Shelby, Mont., died when her car collided head-on with a vehicle driven by her son Anton Eastlick, 21, of Havre, Mont. The collision occurred on an open highway with no apparent cause, and Anton sustained a broken ankle and cuts. Highway patrolman Jim Persling reported details.
Welfare workers from Neosho Bourbon Allen and Wilson Counties will meet at the Memorial building Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Topeka state blind division representatives Malcolm Jasper and Marguerite Blaze will attend along with local directors and welfare visitors.
Senator Olin D. Johnston says a compromise farm bill being drafted will be acceptable to a majority in both chambers as conferees resume work after Easter. President Eisenhower backs quick action and endorses two farm measures expanding the milk program and easing farm gas tax costs.
Detroit milk strike leaders of the Fair Share Bargaining Assn called off the nine day tieup. Picketing ended at 1 p.m. Detroit milk supply rose to more than 75 percent of normal. Rolland Brengle said the group gained one objective with a price increase. Other union leaders blamed court orders restricting picketing and police escorts for milk trucks.
A speech and hearing clinic for children with cerebral palsy will be held at Neosho Memorial Hospital on April 13 with the Institute of Logopedics at Wichita providing personnel and equipment at no cost. Three speech examiners and three case history recorders will work to identify speech and hearing problems and plan rehabilitation with parents.
A series of tornadoes across Oklahoma left Drumright with five deaths and about 100 homes destroyed or damaged. At least seven deaths occurred overall across Oklahoma Kansas and Missouri with 50 injured. The Drumright toll included four Bevel family members and other residents.

NBC TV plans a 90 minute summer special exploring hypnosis the supernatural and reincarnation. The program aims to showcase paranormal themes with a televised format and anticipated guest discussions.
A tornado carved a 10 mile path west and north of Toronto last night, killing E. E. Beek about 40, and injuring eight others including his wife and daughter Sharon. The storm damaged at least 10 farmsteads, wrecked Stoney Point school, and knocked out power. Local authorities mobilized National Guard, Red Cross, and Salvation Army for relief as roads were cleared and communications restored.
A midnight tornado struck Baxter Springs injuring five people, two seriously. Lon Jones and his wife lost their eight room home south of town and were hospitalized in Miami Oklahoma with Jones having both legs broken. Martin Paxson and wife suffered minor injuries at their southeast city home. Harold Barr from St Joseph Missouri sprained ankle and cuts when his truck flipped on U S 69 near Quapaw. Southeast residential area bore most damage with trees uprooted and lines down. Kiwanis Park grandstand roof lost.
