In Chanute downtown, residents express mixed views on the use of nonlethal gas in Vietnam. Some say it is humane or necessary to save lives. others compare it to riot control here and question its effects and ethics.
Chanute voters will go to the polls Tuesday to mark choices for city commission and unified district school board posts in one of the quietest elections here in years. Two commissioners and three unified district school board members will be elected. Only three candidates are out for the governing body positions, and only five for the school board openings. In addition to these choices, the city electorate will be asked to mark public opinion ballots to indicate what it thinks about issuing $35,000 worth of bonds for improving the Central Park pavilion. The vote will not be legally binding but is to serve as a guide for the city commission in deciding whether to exercise authority for the issue given by voters a number of years ago but not used. Two of the commission candidates are incumbents serving by appointment and seeking election for the first time. They are Dr. James W. Kensett, appointed in December 1963 to complete the unexpired term of the late Eddie Caldwell, and Fred Harris, appointed last October to complete the unexpired term of the late W. J. U S Navy aircraft knocked out a bridge 65 miles south of Hanoi and clashed with three Communist MIG jets over Dong Phuong, while 50 U S Air Force fighters targeted Ham Rong Bridge at Thanh Hoa. The action marked the closest approach to Hanoi by U S planes to date, with mixed results and uncertain bridge destruction.

Greensboro AP report states 16 prisoners at a West Jefferson prison camp were indicted by a federal grand jury for filing false income tax refund claims. William Olden McCall, a Jackson County native, named as mastermind, and each co-defendant faced charges for filing false claims in their names. McCall allegedly sought a refund for himself.
An intercepted letter notes three species of prehistoric man coexisting at the same time and place, humorously contrasting their coexistence with that of modern humans. The message closes with a cordial sign‑off, Yours.

F. W. Brinkerhoff, editor of the Pittsburg Headlight and Sun, was hospitalized in Pittsburg on Friday after suffering what doctors termed a slight stroke.
Kansas traffic death log shows 138 fatalities for April through 9 a.m. Saturday compared with 143 in the comparable 1964 period. The AP report lists Topeka area data for the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Kansas House passed six bills in a $49.6 million tax package, below Gov. Avery's request. The measures include an $17.86 million annual income tax hike, a reduced 3 percent sales tax rate proposal, a 9 cent cigarette tax increase, a yearly withholding system for state income tax, a liquor enforcement tax rise, and a higher interest on inactive fund deposits. The package awaits Avery's signature and faces possible Senate reconciling.
A two car collision on U S 169 near Cherryvale during a rainstorm Friday night killed three people, including Sherman K. Harrison and Daniel J. Smith of nearby Iowa and Cherryvale resident John E. Copeland. Three others from Iowa and Des Moines were injured and taken to Labette County Medical Center in Parsons in fair condition.
A collision between a pickup truck and a Union Pacific freight train near Edwardsville in Wyandotte County left Toma Ellis Jr. dead at 30 and Stanley B. Orr seriously injured, with Charles Riley 28 treated for shock and abrasions. Orr is from Ripley Illinois. Ellis from Bonner Springs Kansas.
Improvements totaling an estimated 15000 will be begun early next week at the Chanute Service Cooperative Association, 707 North Highland. The project includes three steel bins with over 30000 bushel storage and a 40 by 40 foot feed mixing mill. Contractor is Walt Hanna of Walt's Millworks, McPherson. Electrical contract to be let locally.
Nasa extends a $252,784 contract with Midwest Research Institute of Kansas City. The project involves Menorah Medical Center collaboration to develop space knowledge useful to medicine and to continue sharing space research results with industry across Missouri Kansas Iowa Nebraska Arkansas Oklahoma and part of Minnesota.
Chicago AP reports Dr. Louis Leakey announced evidence that three distinct prehistoric human species inhabited Olduvai Gorge in East Africa simultaneously about one million years ago. He presented a reconstructed skull named George and noted tools may have been made by any of the three species Zinjanthropus Homo habilis or Pithecanthropine.
