Fire claims buildings in Newburgh
A fierce blaze on Colden and South Water streets in Newburgh destroyed nine structures and damaged several more while a number of flats were emptied and residents sought keepsakes. The largest building, a six story structure owned by Walter B. Martin, was among the flames. Firefighting from multiple towns, freezing conditions, and ice drenched gear hampered efforts but no fatalities occurred. Loss estimated at about 250000 with extensive property damage and humanitarian help from local agencies.
