Vilas and Company Leads U S Turkey Industry
Vilas and Company of Storm Lake grew from a Baxter teaching job to a major fully integrated turkey producer. Bert E. Vilas started in 1902, expanded through Madrid Boone and Ogden, built Storm Lake plant in 1925, and now processes up to 15,000 turkeys daily with about 400 peak employees. The firm ships domestically and to foreign markets, and Vilas once led Iowa poultry groups, later becoming national president in 1943-44.
