Arson Attempts in Cedar Rapids Saturday Morning

Two arson attempts within minutes in Cedar Rapids drew police to the southwest quadrant and the Loop. At 417 Fifth Ave SW a fire was started but extinguished, a vacant residence found with burned debris on a window ledge. A second unlit pile was found at Guaranty Bank 302 Third Ave SE. investigators note burners or hot stove in an employees lounge. Investigation continues with fire officials noting suspicious activity and ongoing inquiry.

Pope John Paul II Urges Peace Amid Irish Turmoil

The pope urged both sides to reject violence appealing to youths to avoid extremist voices. Tens of thousands in Drogheda cheered as armed troops secured the papal visit, then he toured Dublin in the popemobile to hundreds of thousands. Congress deal collapses as pay hike in limbo

Congress faced a rare reversal as a funding bill died in a 55 to 9 Senate vote after the House pressed for strict abortion spending controls and a 5.5 percent congressional pay raise. Tritium convoy moves to bury material near Flagstaff

A half mile long convoy carrying 20 tons of tritium arrived at a depot 12 miles west of Flagstaff after an 11 hour ride from Tucson. About 30 protesters opposed the burial citing safety concerns while Governor Babbitt ordered the National Guard to secure the cargo. Police and National Guard helicopters cleared the route as scientists inspected the $500000 shipment.

Jepsen joins bid to block raises until budget balanced

Senator Roger Jepsen of Iowa joins Nebraska's James Exon in introducing a bill to prohibit pay raises for Congress and federal judges until the federal budget is balanced. Exon introduced the measure during a Saturday Senate session with Jepsen and three other senators as co sponsors. The bill opposes a pay raise being sought in Congress.
