Supreme Court to decide workers right to refuse dangerous jobs

The Supreme Court agreed to hear a case challenging whether workers may refuse unsafe tasks without employer retaliation. The 6th Circuit ruled for Labor Secretary Marshall’s authority after Whirlpool disciplined two Marion Ohio plant workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Act prohibits firing for safety complaints, but a Labor Department rule limits the right to walk off.

Pope John Paul II ends a 214 day Irish tour and flies from Shannon to Boston for a seven day U S visit. He visits Boston New York Philadelphia Des Moines Chicago and Washington with massive crowds expected in Boston Common and along a 20 mile motorcade route.

Gazette Recipe Contest opens with eight categories

The second annual Gazette Recipe Contest begins today with new rules and categories. Eastern Iowans 12 or older may enter by noon Oct 19, with mailed entries postmarked by Oct 18. Winners: two per category, cook-off Nov 5 at IE Tower, with cash prizes and published recipes in The Gazette tabloid on Nov 18.
