Bud Ward of Spokane Washington defeated Ray Billows of Poughkeepsie New York 7 and 5 to win the 43rd U S amateur championship at Glenview Illinois. Ward's brilliant putting and steady play overcame Billows after a morning four up lead. Ward, 26, survived windy conditions and posted a five under par 67 in the semi finals over Art Doering of Chicago.
