Five people were killed in Iowa over the weekend in various accidents, including an automobile train collision. The victims include J. E. Dolan, 66, of Glenwood Minnesota, and Charles W. Eldridge and his wife of Kensett. The United Press reports details of the incidents.
Joe Pasler a 72 year old farmer from near Yale was killed when his car collided at a crossing two miles east of Yale with another farmer Hanssen after a corn field blocked the view.
A freight train struck a stalled car near Kensett killing Dolan and the Eldridges. Dolan leapt to safety but died. A 3-year-old, Joan Thompson, was killed by an auto on highway 92 near Sandyville. A man identified as William Pritchard, 33, of Muscatine, died after a westbound train collision two miles east of Muscatine. Coroners said inquests would be held or not.
Special to The Gazette reports a Sunday night four car crash near junction 149 and 6 east of Grinnell injuring NGO Mrs. Virginia Pulis of Grinnell with a wrenched back Miss Maxine Hettler a Van Horne teacher with a severely bruised face and Mrs. Sherman Johnson of Fort Des Moines with a scalp injury. All were treated at Marengo.
AMES, UP Registration began at Iowa State college Monday for upperclassmen as more than 2,000 freshmen scanned their class schedules. Officials predicted total enrollment of 6,300 students, an all time record, possibly reaching 6,500.
Des Moines report notes an autumnal feel across Iowa with near normal temperatures and clear skies after a week of heat. Autumn officially begins at 4 50 p m next Saturday per the weather bureau.
Calamus resident Charles Walker, 54, died suddenly from a heart attack Saturday night. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at his home and 2 p.m. at Mount Vernon Methodist Church with Rev. E. G. Hunt officiating. Burial will be at Roseville cemetery. Survived by wife Minnie Wendell Walker and three sons Charles Jr John Byron, plus sister Frances Clark of Miami. Predeceased by two sisters and a brother.
The City of Maquoketa Iowa invites sealed proposals for general construction electrical and recirculating and plumbing work on a municipal pool and bathhouse. Bids due Sept 29 1939 at 7 00 pm with deposits refundable less 5 00. bids must include 5 percent bid bond. Documents on file at City Clerk Office and E A Pickworth Architect Waterloo Iowa. Preference given to Iowa products and labor. City may reject any or all bids.
Marion Nature and Garden club sponsored a two session flower and garden show drawing nearly 250 visitors. Judges were Mrs J L Rhea and Mrs Henry J Hromek of Cedar Rapids. Booze chaired, Murphey chaired programs. Exhibits covered cut flowers, arrangements, vegetables, fruits, and house plants with many prize winners listed by category and entrant.
Mr and Mrs Roy Guzzle and their son Tim of Ottumwa were guests this weekend of their relatives Mr and Mrs W J Turner and Mr and Mrs Charles Guzzle.
Dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan G. Hickey included Mrs. Hickey's cousins John Collins of Clinton and D. J. Collins of Houston Texas, and Mrs. Hickey's brother J. D. Bell with his daughters Almeda Bell Paul Bell Shirley Ann and Patty Bell of Cedar Rapids.
Townsend Club No 2 will convene Tuesday at 7 30 pm in Memorial Hall. Entertainment follows the meeting. All members are urged to attend. Membership cards are ready.

Richard Allen Derflinger, son of Mr and Mrs Dick Derflinger, aged three, ill with intestinal influenza, was taken to Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids last Thursday for treatment and is now showing improvement.
Faye Parks returns to school two weeks after tearing ligaments in her left leg during a fall at the high school tennis court. Her leg remains in a cast as she resumes classes and recovers.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Storm and their children Charles and Sandra returned Sunday evening from a week long vacation with relatives in Chicago.
Jeanne Slife daughter of Mr and Mrs W L Slife of Iowa City and Ralph C Hawk son of Mr and Mrs Clifton Hawk of Marion were wed Saturday at the bride’s home in a single ring ceremony conducted by Rev E E Dierks of the First Baptist church. The bride wore navy blue chiffon velvet and white orchid corsage. Guests from Marion Cedar Rapids Kewanee Chicago Oak Park and others attended. The couple will reside in Ames after a wedding trip.
E C Hamm of Marion was elected president at the county convention of Christian churches held Sunday in Troy Mills. L W Heerner of Center Point was named vice president and Ethel Schantz of Center Point, secretary and treasurer. L J Dennis of Center Point chosen song leader. Several local residents attended the picnic and convention, with extended visits from Beyer family of Dubuque and Harriet Beyer, home economics instructor.

A scrubbing bee is planned for 7 o clock this evening at the Presbyterian church to clean the basement ceiling. Attendees are asked to bring sponges, buckets, scrub brushes and a stepladder.
Richard Bushey a University of Iowa sophomore and Dale Bushey a freshman from Carlisle Pennsylvania were weekend guests of their cousin Mrs Leon R Blinks at her Iowa City home.
Mrs. Clara Wilson and Mrs. N. A. Baker with guests Mr. and Mrs. Peter Grassfield and Mrs. Lucie Voris of Fairhope Alabama spent Sunday in Vinton attending Presbyterian church services with friends.
Mr and Mrs E G Frederick and daughters Mary and Jean and Mrs Frederick's mother Mrs L C Rinard of Coggan spent Sunday at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines with Mr Rinard. His arthritis illness is described as unimproved.
Supper guests Sunday evening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Crawford were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dahlke and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Johnson of Webster City. Mrs. Vern Olmsted, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford, returned to her home.
The Crawford family visited at Iowa City hospital for a Sunday update. Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Mead will be held in Ionia with Rev. Bretnall and W. F. Kruger attending. The Priscilla guild plans a 1 pm picnic at the Congregational church with officer elections and a note to shift meeting day. I. E. Isham and family returned from Belle Fourche, and Mrs. Fitzpatrick hosts guests from Chicago. Mrs. Pearl Jackson has recovered from illness. The Cira family traveled to Logansport for relatives, with Michael Gallo accompanying them home.
West Liberty, IA James Hicks 42 of Grinnell died Sunday during a jaloppy derby at the West Liberty fairgrounds when his car tried to pass another on a curve. His vehicle rolled multiple times and struck a tree narrowly missing a spectator fence. Survived by wife and seven children. No inquest planned.
Iowa City officers and state investigators rejoined Sheriff Don McComas at the Novotny farm near Shueyville to solve a double murder case. Fingerprints and clues including a holster, a half full beer bottle, and a .38 caliber shell yielded no results as authorities report a stone wall in the inquiry.
The Iowa state executive council allocated funds from a 175000 conservation commission pool to immediate park projects. National Parks Service camps in six state parks receive 1000 each at Springbrook Guthrie county Backbone Delaware Macbride Johnson Black Hawk Sac Danville Des Moines Henry counties and McGregor Clayton. Nearly 700 teachers from Fayette Bremer and Chickasaw counties gather in West Union for a one day class demonstration center led by university and state educators including Dr H F Spitzer Dr J B Edmonson Dr H H Davis Mary Jane McCrea and others with students from local schools assisting in the program.
Ignatz Ike Westmark 64 a noted Dyersville resident died in a Dubuque hospital Saturday after sudden acute appendicitis. Survived by wife five sons Walter deputy sheriff John Des Moines Elmer Cleo Arthur Dyersville and two daughters Mrs Walter Streif and Mrs George Streif Epworth. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
The Cedar Rapids City Council will meet September 30 1939 at City Hall to adopt plans specifications and contract forms for a garage and work shop on the east bank of the river at Fifth Avenue Southeast behind Fire Station No 1. Miss Helen Jacobsen daughter of Mr. and Mrs Will Jacobsen of Dysart wed Richard Smith jr son of Mr. and Mrs Richard Smith sr of Oelwein in a Saturday ceremony at the Methodist church officiated by Rev F C Witzigman. A reception for twenty followed at Brown's tea room and the couple plans a wedding trip through the Ozarks before settling in Oelwein where Mr Smith works at the First National Bank.
Funeral services were held Sunday in Fayette for Mrs. Hattie Dorman widow of Dr. Jerry M. Dorman and mother of Dr. John Dorman Upper Iowa University athletics coach. She would have turned 82 Oct 3 having lived in Fayette since age three. Born on a farm south of Fayette she attended Fayette Seminary later. Her marriages were to John Hass in 1877 and Dr. Jerry Dorman in 1883. She was active in the Methodist church Eastern Star and Women’s Missionary society. She leaves three daughters Edna wife of Bishop Edwin F. Lee Claire Cook of Sioux City and Mrs Clarence Patten of Reno Nevada.
In La Porte City the Pinochle club elected Bess Kline as president and Mrs. Ernest Nies as secretary at a meeting at Mrs. J. H. Goon's home. The Thrift club named officers including President Mrs. Cliff Cutler and Secretary Treasurer Mrs. Clark Johnson, with Mrs. Port Shaner as reporter. Both clubs set upcoming meetings for October 5 and October 19 respectively.
Backstage in Iowa politics Lieut. Gov. B B Hick Enlooper asserts the United States should stay out of the war in Europe. He argues no occasion for involvement exists under current conditions and cautions against war used to bolster political factions. He also sees no need for a special legislative session before or after regular sessions.
WPA Administrator George Keller on leave from the University of Iowa may soon decide whether to keep his WPA role or return to academia. Public Safety Commissioner Karl W Fischer hides his dominance at home as a baby girl joined the Fischer clan, named Judith Kay after a family contest.
Iowa City area reports three people injured in two separate Saturday crashes near the city. Alma Bontrager, 18, suffered a badly cut knee and a severe forehead wound when her car struck a parked vehicle driven by Ivan Swartzendruber, who was also injured but not seriously. In a second crash on Sand Road, Arthur Thomans sustained severe cuts after his car rear ended a parked truck. two other cars collided but caused no injuries. Glenn R. Bowen, June grad of the University of Iowa College of Law, joins Atty. A. E. Maine in Iowa City. Rabbi Morris N. Kertzer named guest speaker for Day of Atonement services for Jewish students at UI. Funeral set for Mrs. E. W. Hildenbrand, 78, died after three months illness. she lived in Iowa City since 1896 with surviving relatives listed.
NEW HAMPTON UP Rep. William Lemke North Dakota Republican told 500 farmers at a fourth district Farmers Union picnic that the United States should not sell munitions to foreign nations. He said the nation should not enter the European war unless attacked.
Miss Marjorie I Mohr wed Clark T Wiedow and Miss Alice G Wiedow wed Elton H Wolf in a single ring ceremony at the Rev H W Brandt home in Marengo. Both Wolf and Wiedow families hail from Deep River and the couples plan to reside nearby.

Washington AP reports four WPA white-collar projects in Iowa will continue with private sponsorship sharing costs. The State Board of Trustees of Libraries and Museums will sponsor the $1,025 monthly art project for about 98 workers. Des Moines Independent School District backs the $4,190 music project for about 40 workers. The Writers Project, costing $11,360 monthly, employs about 135 with the State Department of Public Instruction as sponsor. The Historical Records project, costing $39,910 monthly, will employ about 500 with the same libraries and museums board sponsoring.
Fire swept the old Des Moines University administration building on Monday after an explosion of gases traced to a stairway area on the first floor. The 1889 central structure, closed ten years ago, was left in ruins as residents felt the blast and efforts to revive a college on the campus continued nearby.
