The Cedar Rapids City Council approved an $890,000 contract with Heinlein Schrock Architects of Kansas City to design the new baseball stadium, partnering with Leo Peiffer Architects of Cedar Rapids. Fire damages Pierce Lumber warehouse in Belle Plaine

Fire officials say arson caused heavy damage to the Pierce Lumber Inc. warehouse in Belle Plaine on Tuesday. State Fire Marshal investigators collected samples Wednesday as firefighters removed burning bundles and cooled the site. remaining lumber suffered smoke and water damage.

Vinton-Shellsburg voters await final school board results as Benton County Board of Supervisors canvass Friday. Unofficial counts show Mary Coots 14 and Gerald Horst 11 in one race, with three absentee ballots and one challenged ballot to decide. Incumbent Sainsbury leads Reifenstahl 833 to 202. Marion school board to send improvement plan to state

The Marion Independent School District will submit a Comprehensive School Improvement Plan for 2000 to 2004 aimed at yearly growth in reading and math for all students. Facilitator Jill Olsen-Virlee presented the plan, which the board unanimously approved, with a filing deadline this Friday.

OSHA cuts fines after Cedar Rapids worker death

OSHA reduced Cedar Rapids Water Pollution Control fines from 219000 to 78000 after investigating the May 16 death of Donald J. Murphy, 44, of Ely from hydrogen sulfide poisoning. The city kept 24 violations but saw smaller per-violation penalties. Mary Bryant said penalties aim to prevent repeats and not just raise revenue.
