Tipton remains perfect this season by blanking West Branch 20-0 in non conference play. Bob Ward scored on 11 and 3 yard runs and Mike Gade added a 1 yard TD dive. The Tigers amassed 300 rushing yards as the defense again held opponents scoreless in two games.
Bill Ament ran for three touchdowns in the first half to seal a 22-0 victory for Dyersville Beckman over Monticello. Beckman piled up 277 rushing yards behind a dominant ground attack.
Manchester used a rugged rushing attack to roll past Elkader 30-0 for its first win. The Manhawks led 8-0 at halftime and pulled away with two Chuck Raisch touchdowns and singles by John Whitman and Mike McMahon.
Jerry Lancaster scored three touchdowns to power Marion sophomores to a 54-0 victory over Benton Community on Friday. Van Gillman added a 65 yard pick six as Marion's defense overwhelmed Benton, holding it to minus 50 rushing yards and no passing yards.
Former jockey John Longden age 62 is listed in good condition at St. Luke's hospital in Pasadena California with a blood ailment. A hospital spokesman declined to disclose details about the illness.
Jefferson High wins a three team mile at Prairie with nine points while Prairie and Linn-Mar tie for second with 21 points each. Gene Nanktge boren of Jeff wins individual honors in 4 42.6 as Brant severelies, L mM 5 Twisleton and Jeft's Gard noted in relay results.
Gongola collected three hits and handled catching duties as St George of Lansing beat Cresco of Notre Dame 15-1 in a poke school baseball game on Thursday.
Belle Plaine used a dominant 50-0 victory over Vinton to move to 2-0, with Joel Junge scoring four touchdowns and Jim Tatman adding four TDs. Junge also had two 47 and 39 yard runs plus two touchdown passes to Tatman. Don Drahos and Mahlon Kaloupek caught the other scores as Belle Plaine piled up 114-0 over its first two games.
Greg Fetter rushed for 21 yards and threw a 25 yard TD pass to Bob Cieppe as the Prairie sophomores beat Anamosa 14-2. The score came despite Anamosa’s brief second quarter drive.
Muscatine, new MVC member, opened with a 20-8 non conference win over Fairfield. Fisher scored on a 13 yard run, Flicker connected for a TD pass, Noble caught a scoring pass, and Bargas added a run for Muscatine.
A large slate of Iowa high school football games is reported with numerous results. Notable scores include West Central 0 Central City 26, Marion 37 Benton 14, Oelwein 54 over Waukon 40, Cedar Valley 50 Vinton 0, and West Bend 12 Sioux Rapids 0 among many others across the region.
Ken Harrelson missed his Cleveland flight and faced a three figure fine after Eddie Leon and Mike Paul were sidelined by Dave Johnson. Johnson delivered the decisive blow in the sixth as Baltimore beat Cleveland 2-1 to secure at least a share of the AL East lead. Detroit trailed by 1742 games after a 4-3 loss to Washington.
Coggon Harry Evers of North Linn ran in from the six yard line in the third period to propel a 8-0 victory over Maquoketa Valley in the Tri-Rivers conference opener for both teams.
Center Point quarterback Robin Lala threw two touchdown passes to guide Center Point to a 20-0 win over Central City in the Tri Rivers Conference opener for both teams. The win boosts Center Point’s record as Central City falls to 0-1 in league play.
Larry Norman sprinted 57 yards from scrimmage and 30 yards on an interception return for two touchdowns as East Buchanan blanked Alburnett 30-0 in the opener. Score by quarters shows East Buchanan ahead 0 0 0 0 to 0 0 0 0.
Alex Webster was named Giants head coach after Allie Sherman was fired following a 17-13 exhibition loss to the Steelers in Montreal. Webster, a former running back and offensive coach, promised a 10-4 season and division title if realized, as Wellington Mara explained the change to the press.
Detroit built on a fast offense as Bill Munson and Greg Landry connected for three TD passes and 281 air yards. The Lions improved to five wins in six exhibition games, their best since 1954, while New Orleans was overwhelmed 42 to 7 at night football.

Stratford Conn captured its third national men's softball championship by defeating Mountain View Calif 7-0 in the deciding game of the USA national tournament in Springfield Mo on Friday night.
Reinbeck improved to 1-1 with a 56 8 victory over a young Dysart Geneseo squad. Reinbeck led 36-0 at halftime and rolled to the win behind a strong ground game and stout defense.
LaPorte City used a tough defense to shut out North Tama 12-0. Jon Schuman threw two touchdown passes to Jeff Tecklenburg and Ralph Hospodarsky, delivering the Rams the victory.
Independence recovered a fumble at the 16 yard line with 1 14 to go and then scored the winning touchdown as Mark Hoover plunged in from the one for a 13-6 lead. Hoover earlier scored the first touchdown on a six yard run. Bob Estey of North rumbled 51 yards for a lone TD.
Valley defeats South Winneshiek 36 to 0 as Mickey Martin spearheads with a 46 yard run and a 14 yard score. Larry Gardner adds two touchdowns while Dave Metzger contributes one. Martin and Gardner produced the key rushing scores in the Friday game.
Mid Prairie rolled to a 58-0 victory over Cardinal as Jim Baranek and Dennis Miller each scored twice on runs of 40 and 36 yards for Baranek and 12 yard bursts for Miller. Spreacker added a 26 yard run and a 28 yard TD pass from Dan Jirs as Mid Prairie improves to 2-0 with Cardinal drop continues.
