Aid Errors May Cost U.S. $800 Million
Washington AP reports the first 18 months of the new Supplemental Security Income program were traumatic and may cost the government $800 million in mispayments. Social Security Commissioner James Cardwell told a House subcommittee overpayments reached $461 million and could rise. The program began in 1974, handling nearly $8 billion for over four million people, with up to 15,000 new claims monthly. Cardwell cited systemic conversion flaws and carryover errors from state records as the main source of issues, and said improvement hinges on simplifying the program and fixing the new system.
