House approves deferral option for farm loan repayments
The House backed a bill allowing financially stressed farmers to defer one year of federal loan payments and extended the Farmers Home Administration credit program through September 1985. The measure keeps higher lending ceilings but reduces overall FmHA authority by about 1.6 billion, despite opposition from Agriculture Secretary John Block who warns the deferral risks turning loans into gifts.
