Indictments Against Johnson County Officials Voided
Eight indictments from the Johnson County grand jury issued May 27 were quashed by District Court Judge Harold Victor. He ruled the 1970 grand jury could not extend into 1971 and that actions after December 1970 were invalid. Indicted were Supervisors Ed Kessler and Ralph Pribyl, former Supervisor Clayton Mahoney, Assistant County Engineer Harvey Luther, L. L. Pelling Jr., Jim Murphy Jr., Isaac Shaver, and Chester Hanson. The case centered on accusations of accepting or giving gifts or gratuities in violation of Iowa law. The next step could be an appeal to the state Supreme Court or resubmission of evidence to the 1971 grand jury.
