Slayings Called Act Of Revenge At Tidenix
A woman and five children and a son in law were killed Friday night in their home in what police describe as revenge by a man who believed the husband ran away with his wife. Suspect John Freeman, 45, was captured after being wounded scrambling over a fence. The dead include Novella Bentley 42 and her 16 year old daughter Pamela, Pamela's husband Frank Martin 18, and children Tracy 1 Charlotte 2 and Tina 8. Freeman had a rented car, cash and an airline ticket to Tucson. Freeman’s wife and two children disappeared last February. Martin lay at the front door as others were found in the house. The suspect may have been wounded during the struggle. Neighbors recalled Freeman’s entry and subsequent shots heard. Freeman was intercepted by police as he climbed over a fence and dropped his pistols when ordered to halt. The Bentley case was linked to a divorce behind the motive. The governor and Briggs discussed alternatives to mitigate the impact of the tentative order on local governments.

Jack LeMaster, 26, of 1219 Diai and tuad NE, died after being struck by a car driven by Glenn F. Dighton, 43, at the intersection of Eighth Avenue SE and Fifth Street SE in Cedar Rapids. LeMaster suffered head injuries and a broken shoulder as three people chased each other across the street. The incident occurred about 10 15 p.m. Police said the investigation is continuing. LeMaster, a V J Cycle Sports owner and operator, was born May 21, 1939 in near Alexandria Missouri and was married to Norma Bartels in Kahoka Missouri July 20, 1957. He was a member of Faith United Methodist church and served on its board of trustees.
