Unions Urged to Aid Black Racial Equality Movement

Washington AP reports Catholic leaders criticize the labor movement for racial bias. Msgr George Higgins says unions are on the defensive and notes some unions still practice discrimination or offer only token compliance. He argues many Black workers cannot join unions because large parts of the marginal labor market are unorganized. Bayard Rustin is quoted on choices faced by Black workers regarding strengthening unions or acting as pawns in anti-union strategies. Higgins also compares the plight of Mexican Americans to that of Black workers.
