Fifty Years Since Prohibition Ended By Arthur Everett
New York AP report marks 50 years since the Volstead Act made the nation dry. It notes the Roaring Twenties era, the rise of speakeasies, bathtub gin, and a booming crime syndicate, and cites the 18th Amendment’s 1918 adoption and 1929 enforcement. It recalls Hoover praise and Volstead sponsor Rep. Andrew Volstead, plus repeal in 1933. It contrasts pre and post prohibition alcohol use and public attitudes.
