Weekend Traffic Toll Rises to 7
Seven people were killed in Iowa traffic accidents over the weekend while two others died of earlier injuries. Victims include Michael Paul Hansen, 16, of rural Denison, who died in Council Bluffs after being struck Oct. 10, and Michael Johnson, 22, of Mt. Ayr, who was killed when ejected from a car near Mt. Ayr. Also reported were deaths near Grinnell, Shenandoah, Des Moines, and Dubuque involving drivers, pedestrians, and passengers, with multiple injuries in several incidents.

INDEPENDENCE The Buchanan county district court under Judge George C Heath handled several actions last week. Farl W Crawford pled guilty to an Oct 10 overload truck charge and fined 446.60 plus costs. Norman A Shea Elkport pled guilty to a second offense drunk driving charge and was ordered to Oakdale hospital for treatment with case continued until report received. James D Bagby Independence had an appeal dismissed for failure to appear and was fined 8 dollars plus costs. Lester D Grundmeier Faribault Minn pled innocent to a July 21 drunken driving charge. trial set for Dec 16. A hearing is set Oct 30 on parole revocation for James F Melka Independence who had a May 15 suspended sentence to Anamosa reformatory and two-year parole to Buchanan county sheriff. Melka pled guilty to stealing a motor from Gates Motor Supply in Independence April 18.
