Organized During World War I Sewing Group Active in Cedar Rapids
For 24 years a Cedar Rapids group of women has met monthly to sew for the Red Cross and later for Armenian children soldiers at Oakdale sanatorium and various charities including the Children's Home Community House Sunshine Mission and Camp Good Health. They adopted a French orphan in 1918, sent money to France, and held bake sales and box socials. Since 1929 they reduced regular sewing but an October session lasts all day, turning completed garments over to the Needlework guild. This year 14 dresses and six slips were finished for school-age girls. The group originated in 1917 from Mrs John Adams, now in California, and was officially organized August 14, 1917. Members include charter members still active and 35 total members with officers and sewing chair.
