Moline Spills Wash Regi Falls Homecoming Thriller

Washington suffered a 22-13 loss at Moline as homecoming celebrations helped the Maroons end a four game skid. Moline built a 15-6 halftime edge through two key punt plays and a safety, then pulled away in the second half behind Dick Schluter and John Anders. Washington battled back in the third quarter with a John Hager fumble recovery by Mike Avery driving a later score, but penalties and a stronger Moline defense kept the Warri ors from completing the rally.

Omaha Dropped By Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals withdrew support for the Omaha entry in the American Association citing ongoing financial losses and player needs. Bill Bergesch, Omaha general manager, announced the decision at a news conference in Omaha.

Tipton Tigers upset Marion Indians 14 to 0 ending Marion’s title hopes at home. Darrell Thumm scored from 5 yards after a 42 yard run by Mike Rodemeyer, then Bill Donohue hooked up with Clyde Rife for a 5 yard touchdown. Don Wehde added the extra point and Tipton’s defense held in the rain as Marion failed to threaten.

Manchester dominated Independence 33 6 in the Wamac game. Lynn Longseth and Dave Renken scored two touchdowns each, Longseth on 7 and 9 yard runs while Renken returned a fumble 35 yards for a score. Independence’s lone tally came on a 2 yard run by Roe Peterson.

Marshalltown Romps in 2nd Half 32-12

Marshalltown defeated Cedar Rapids Regis 32 to 12 after breaking open a 6-0 halftime deficit with three third quarter scores and one early fourth quarter TD. Ron Zwemke scored twice on 66 and 60 yard drives, Jim Barness intercepted, Scott McLeod and Dave Sweeney contributed, and Regis tallied both fourth quarter touchdowns against Marshalltown reserves. Regis suffered its sixth straight loss. Marshalltown moved to 5-1.
