Iowa Highways Crashes Kill Three Men and a Boy

Three men and a boy died in Iowa traffic incidents Friday and Saturday, with nine others injured near Shenandoah. Victims include Charles Lewis of Oakland and Allen Williams of Boone, while a Paducah group traveled to South Dakota. the Shenandoah crash involved eleven people and prompted full hospital coverage.

Kinsey lifts censorship but speech will be closed

Dr Alfred C Kinsey withdrew his prior order restricting news coverage of a Central Neuropsychiatric Association speech in Indianapolis after protests by science and newspaper editors groups. Indianapolis officials announced only doctors would be admitted, denying a press rebuff.

Widowed Mother of Two Crowned Buena Vista Homecoming Queen

Wanda Ringgenberg, 25, a junior at Buena Vista College, was chosen homecoming queen from seven candidates. She studies for an elementary teaching certificate and belongs to Del Phi Beta sorority and the Future Teachers Association. The selection came from the Buena Vista Lettermen's club.

Steps Urged To Trim Iowa Relief Costs

Three Iowa officials urged further revision of welfare policies at the Iowa Taxpayers Association meeting. Judge George B. Richter proposed treating relief as indebtedness to be repaid when possible and decrying gratuity. Assistant AG Herman W. Walter cited decentralization of the old age program saving about 100000 dollars and reducing staff. Arling E. Smith listed reforms including welfare statute overhaul, revised institutional care funding, stronger rehabilitation, and thrift in county administration.

Reinbeck Cow Named One of Three Champs

Three grand champion cows were chosen at the International Dairy Show. Lees Hill Ski Lady R, bred by Lees Hill Farms New Vernon New Jersey, won grand champion female in Brown Swiss and senior champ in Ayrshire. Ayr-Line Royal Girl from Hutchinson Kansas was grand and senior champion Ayrshire. Cloverton Craggs 4th of Reinbeck Iowa won champion of female milking Shorthorns and senior Shorthorn. George E. Pike of Waterloo was re-elected president of the Iowa Taxpayers Association during the Des Moines convention. Joseph P. Lawlor of Ames was named fifth district director, succeeding W. S. Rupe. Assembly of Des Moines and other named officials were listed as part of the election slate.

Dundee Man Injured On Manchester Job

A Dundee man, Elmer Downs, about 36, was seriously injured Friday while operating a jackhammer at the new Don Dorman service station in Manchester. The jackhammer exploded and struck him on the head, resulting in a possible skull fracture. Downs is a patient at Willard's hospital.

Beaman 27 of Salix appointed to Iowa Highway Patrol assigned to Boone succeeding Seaman Kenneth Hanna who resigned Oct 1. Beaman is a World War II veteran and replaces Hanna who left patrol duties.

Night Marshal Kills Deer Struck by Truck

A 240 pound deer was killed early after being struck by a truck on highway 3 west of Strawberry Point. Night Marshal Hans Baumgartner pursued the animal and killed it after the collision. the truck driver fled the scene while three Coggon men reported the deer. The carcass was butchered for the locker plant here and Clayton County Sheriff Forest Fischer was informed.

Iowa PTA Elects Officers At Davenport Convention

Mrs Harold Honohan of Boone was elected president of the Iowa Congress of Parents and Teachers at the Davenport convention Friday. Other officers include Mrs George Albrecht first vice president Dr Clifford Bishop second vice president and Mrs Wayne Burgeson secretary. Dr Marcus Bach urged unity among homes schools and churches and noted faith remains the peace link with the Iron Curtain. Charles Martin said Iowa will seek state aid equal to 25 percent of total school costs in the 1955 legislature and that Iowa is among the six states lowest in aid by percentage.

Iowa Pledges Fined For Sign Theft At SUI

Six University of Iowa fraternity pledges pleaded guilty to malicious mischief and taking highway signs. Each was fined 25 dollars plus costs and ordered to replace the signs. Judge Trott urged civic projects at the recreation center or city park.

Door To Be Kept Shut on Elusive Baboon Hereafter

Chicago reports Herman the baboon roaming free on the South Side for two days then slipping back into a cage and escaping again during a photo. Attendants say the door will stay shut to confine him. Herman previously broke from a washroom at a gas station and raided a pear tree before nesting in a basement near a school.

Toledo Students Elect Joanne Wesley Queen

Joanne Wesley, a senior, was crowned queen of the hi during homecoming here Friday. Don Yanda was chosen by Don Upah Phyllis Collins Earline Smith and George Novak as the royal couple's attendants. The marching band won first prize in the parade float contest, with the junior class taking second and the T club third. Children received ribbons for decorated bicycles.
