Eldridge Herron of New York, returning from a Himalaya expedition, attempted to scale the 481 foot pyramid of Khufu in Egypt for the experience and fell to his death. A political note recalls Hoover’s stance on veteran bonuses and public payments.
Speaker John N Garner, speaking from New York, urged a budget balanced by economy and scientific revenue to restore confidence in the credit system. He accused the Hoover administration of concealment about the treasury and argued the Democratic Congress did all it could toward balance, while the administration blocked progress. The plan outlined three parts: budget balance, financial measures to support credit, and unemployment relief.
Three men robbed First National Bank in Herington Kansas late Friday forcing four employees and several customers to lie on the floor. Two robbers guarded while the third rifled the safe and the trio fled in a car toward Delevan. Undetermined cash was taken.
A coroner's jury in Lincoln recommended William B. Hoagland of Omaha be held to district court for negligence in an auto crash near Omaha that killed Mrs. Kathleen Hagood Gambrell of Atlanta. Three Lincoln men testified Hoagland was seen drinking at a football game hours earlier and later was seen staggering.
A gunman bound the hands and feet of assistant cashier Melvin Berglund at the State Bank of Pennock Minnesota and escaped with $1200. Berglund freed himself minutes after the man departed and reported the theft.
Washington reports an almost certain drive for new taxes to cover a 400 million dollar deficit since July 1. A sales tax debate split Democrats in the last session, with calls for government economies and criticism of nuisance taxes. President Hoover faced pressure, while Roosevelt has not stated a sales tax position. Hearst remains a strong supporter.
At the Texas state fair a young animal trainer, Marjorie Kemp, was attacked by a lion during a circus exhibition. Despite a bleeding shoulder, she urged the audience to stay and finished the show, telling them the act would continue and nothing was wrong.

Smoot claimed a national committee employee sent it.
An American woman identified as Mrs Praecillad nee Jewitt James and other passengers were rescued by a passing steamer after a sea plane forced down in the English Channel during a storm en route from England to Egypt. They spent the night on the water after the pilot sent up flares.
authorities hunted a 30 to 35 year old man described as 5 ft 6 in and 145 pounds who shot dead Charles Pierce 65 and knocked his wife unconscious at their Cascade area farm. A fingerprint expert was brought in, bloodhounds trailed from a state reformatory, and witnesses questioned a hired man and the son. The slayer fled with clothing guns and ammunition, leaving nearly $1000 in cash behind.
AP report from Fairbury Nebraska states veterinarian Dr William Frantz 52 Ohiowa Neb confessed to being at the Stainbrook home in Daykin Thursday night after 60 year old Clarence Stainbrook was slain and his mother Mrs Marcus Stainbrook 80 critically wounded. The dog bark was suspected to have triggered a quarrel that led to the killings and Frantz is jailed with his mother hospitalized for injuries.
Three Rock county deputies stopped a five ton canvas covered truck on highway 20 near Orfordville and found 1,000 gallon cans of alcohol believed headed to Dubuque Indiana from a Kenosha area distillery. Suspects Lewis Cardamen and Joe Lucas, both 26 of Kenosha, were arrested.
In Taylorville Illinois two Nokomis mine pickets were shot early Friday as violence in the mine war worsened. A miner died from his wounds while other guards and civilians were injured in a truck wreck and gunfire near Hewittville and Peabody mine. Corporal Myers remains jailed for the fatal shooting of Andrew Ganis. Warrants seek murder charges against Col. Davis and Capt. Meacham who commanded six National Guard companies on site.
Washington reports Secretary Charles Adams is examining the hiring of political speech writer Sam Jones by Assistant Secretary Jahncke. Jones, 29, receives 36 500 yearly pay from Navy funds and has aided Jahncke on Hoover campaign speeches. The appointment followed a special presidential authorization after the Economy Act.
Washington AP Hoke Smith field commander of the bonus expeditionary force urged all B E F posts and camps to send a complete report of their sub-divisions to field headquarters in Uniontown Pennsylvania. The data were requested by Brigadier General Frank T Hines head of the veterans administration after Smith met with Hines and other B E F members at the White House with President Hoover.
An open letter signed by former President Calvin Coolidge former Governor Alfred E. Smith and four other notables calls for sweeping government cost reductions. Addressed to Rear Admiral Richard Byrd, the letter warns that high government spending leads to servitude and urges universal sacrifice to prevent fiscal collapse and loss of liberty.
Torsten Kreuger, brother of the late Ivar Kreuger, was in police custody in Stockholm on Friday. Police said the arrest followed disclosures of the Hoeg Brofersen company’s bookkeeping practices, a firm he controlled that went bankrupt after his brother’s death.

James Haycraft, 41, of Iowa City, was killed Friday when a pile of iron posts he was loading on a truck toppled and pinned him against the machine. An employee of the state highway commission, he is survived by his widow and several children.

Martin J. Insull, indicted in Chicago over the utilities collapse controlled by him and his brother, was remanded in Barrie Ontario until Nov. 4.
