Saturday livestock estimates report 500 cattle, 500 hogs, 100 sheep. Hogs steady to 25 cents higher. cattle and sheep about steady. Top hogs at $21.15 per 210–260 lb load. calves and cows show mixed gains with steady demand.
Receipts Friday estimated 45,000, week ago 50,000, year age 49,000. Actuals Thursday 40,000. Coverage at two southern Minnesota packing plants and a dozen Iowa plants plus out-of-state stations. Trade active, prices steady to 25c higher than Thursday. Good and choice hogs across weight classes from 160 pounds to 550 pounds price ranges shown, with sows and food hogs listed.
Sioux City reports salable cattle receipts at 1,300 with 150 calves. Slaughter steers and heifers scarce for market test. Limited sales steady. Prime 1,149 lb steers at 37.75, choice 880 lb heifers at 34.00. Cows firm at 26.50 to 29.00. utility 22.00 to 25.50. canners and cutters 17.50 to 21.00. Stockers and feeders largely held for Monday trading.
In Omaha area cattle sale market receipts total about 1200 head with calves 400 salable. Slaughter classes steady as dealers report a clean up trade. Stockers and feeders little changed. Direct to dealers make up over half the receipts. One load around 1200 lb fed steer price at 37.25. Utility and commercial cows 22.00 to 27.50. Canners and cutters 17.00 to 21.00. Choice dealers quotable up to 35.00.
Waterloo market reports hog prices steady with top per hundredweight at 29.00 for butchers. Prices range from 16.00 for 500 to 550 pounds up to 29.00 for 160 to 170 pounds, listing 170 to 189 pounds at 17.25 and 190 to 200 pounds at 19.75, among other weight brackets and sow prices.
Livestock buyers list hog prices by weight at Ottumwa market. Prices range from 25 cents to over 20 dollars per hundredweight, with sows and large heavy hogs fetching mid to upper teens and early twenties, reflecting market volatility.
C R MARKETS reports Cedar Rapids hog market steady. Base quotations rise a quarter for hogs delivered and weighed at the Cedar Rapids plant. Listings cover good butchers and packers across weight ranges, plus cattle calf and sheep sections with prices for primes, choicest, utilities, canners, and common stock.
New York markets were closed in observance of Columbus Day with a short weekend session expected Saturday. Kansas City Livestock reports receipts of 500 cattle and 50 calves, noting insufficient cattle in one class to test the market.
Courthouse judge Floyd Philbrick ruled the jury’s $62,500 verdict for Floyd Noble of Amboy against the Waterloo Cedar Falls and Northern railroad was excessive but said a $50,000 judgment would not be excessive. The case stemmed from a July 9, 1950 car train crash at a Center Point crossing. If Noble accepts $50,000, no new trial. if not, a new trial is ordered. The original award was among Linn county’s largest.
The September term petit jury panel was ordered to report for duty October 22 instead of next Monday. Judge J. E. Heiserman presiding said five trials next week have been settled or continued.
Isabelle Davis dropped a damage and personal injury suit against Fred Pelisek filed Nov 9 1950. Francis Wolrach withdrew a suit against Ralph Furler initiated Jan 30 1950 over a farm lease dispute.
Abe Beechen filed a lawsuit Friday seeking 400.50 dollars from Charlie Hudson Jr. and Betty Jo Hudson for money owed under a contract for the purchase of an automobile.
Senators Gillette and Sparkman introduced a bill to form a non partisan 12 member Hoover type commission to study NATO relations. The group would include four presidential appointees four senators and four from private life to improve Alliance cooperation and public participation in policy.
Bridgeport Connecticut actress Barbara Bennett lost her bid to share custody of her four children in court with former husband singer Morton Downey Judge John T Cullinan rejected the request noting her improved rehabilitation since being deemed an unfit mother in 1941 The ruling cites considerable progress but denies custody sharing.
Chicago market notes weak demand for live poultry with colored hens and heavy chickens posting declines while turkeys hold at 33 cents. Police investigated a break in at 1627 Ninth Street NW where $32 worth of carpenter tools were taken from a house under construction. Entry was gained by smashing a front door glass as contractor Roy Niffenegger reported missing items including a small hand drill chisels and a hammer.
James Walton, 25, was fined $50 for armed assault on a patrolman while arresting his brother on a reckless driving charge. Walton used his artificial arm as a weapon in Green Bay Wisconsin.
The Cleveland Indians announced on Friday the signing of veteran major leaguer Tony Cuc Cinello as coach for the 1952 season.
The Gazette Company of Cedar Rapids Iowa announces the renewal amendment and substitution of its articles. The amendment repeals Article Nine which set debt limits two thirds of capital stock outstanding and authorizes actions by the president and secretary to implement the change. Des Moines, INS. Republican State Chairman Robert K. Goodwin urged Agriculture Secretary Charles Brannan to act on illegal political activity cases involving two PMA workers and asked the Civil Service Commission to hold an open hearing in the Al Cook case. Cook, head of the crop insurance section in Iowa, withdrew his request for a public hearing over Hatch Act charges from the 1950 Senate campaign. Hazen and Benner faced similar accusations tied to Loveland. The commission handed Benner and Hazen to Brannan on July 26, while Cook’s case remains under CSC review after a year of delays.
Washington AP reports a comparison of individual income taxes under present law and under the compromise tax increase bill agreed by a senate house conference committee. The tables show the impact for a full year, with income defined as net income before personal exemptions after deductions.
John Lewis of 436 Thirty-sixth Street NE was discharged after serving since August 9, 1950, in Cedar Rapids with the first group of organized navy reservists to leave. He is the only one of ten in that initial group known to return to civilian life. Chief Boilerman Richard Olson will report to Great Lakes Naval Station for a two week instructor training course.
A $35,000 damage suit against seven Benton County Telephone Association members has been settled out of court. Glenn Johnson of Illinois filed the suit alleging negligence in maintaining a line southwest of Vinton, which struck him and knocked him from a tractor. The stipulation states the claims are fully settled and the case shall be dismissed with prejudice upon payment of costs. attorneys for the defendants paid the costs. The case was filed May 25.
Three articles valued at $76.65 were stolen from the Prastka jewelry store window early Tuesday. Police noted an inventory would be needed to determine the loss. Robert Prastka told officers that two diamond rings and a compact were missing after a burglar smashed a small hole in the front window.
Lisa Sergio world affairs commentator and lecturer will speak in the Little Theater at 8 15 p m Tuesday to open the Coe visiting lecturer series on A World s Eye View of Ourselves. She also will lecture at 10 05 a m Tuesday in St Paul s church on New Security for an Atomic Age. Born in Florence she became an American citizen after fleeing arrest in Italy where as Mussolini s chief radio commentator she obstructed official scripts.
Arthur Woods, 26, of Marion, pled guilty to reckless driving and running a stop sign after an 85 mph chase from Sixteenth Avenue and C Street SW to Sixth Street Road SW. He was fined $200 plus costs and admitted his license was suspended. A district court arraignment on driving with a suspended license followed, with Woods given until Tuesday to plead.
Labor and management at the Quaker Oats plant will meet Saturday morning in what a company spokesman calls an important meeting. Local 110 and DPOWA representatives met with company officials for the third straight day, but Friday had no session. Both sides report progress as about 850 workers have been idle since September 17.
Wage negotiations between striking telephone workers and the Central Iowa Telephone Company resume at 10 a.m. Saturday. A company spokesman said progress was made in Thursday's all day session but a settlement remains distant. The workers, Local 7100 of the Communications Workers of America, are striking in 35 Iowa towns and six Minnesota towns.
In Iowa City the University of Iowa homecoming parade will feature thirteen bands and 39 floats. The Iowa City marching band and the Scottish Highlanders are the only college bands, with two drum and bugle corps, two truck floats with jazz bands, and seven high school bands joining. High school entrants include West Branch and Cedar Rapids McKinley, plus bands from Iowa City high and University high, Wilson and Roosevelt in Cedar Rapids, and West Liberty.
Dr. N C Larson of Keystone was named president of the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Association at its 38th annual Montrose hotel meeting. Dr. Darrell T White of Williamsburg became vice president, and Dr. Calvin G Moore of Toledo joined the executive board for a three year term. Re-elected were Dr. N R Waggoner of Olin as secretary and Dr. A R Menary of Cedar Rapids as treasurer. Dr. C G Cole of Ames, head of the USDA swine disease lab, was made an honorary member. Registration for the two day meeting totaled 197 men and 97 women.
DES MOINES UP The Iowa State Commerce Commission announced Friday it will hold hearings in Des Moines on October 30 to consider petitions to build power lines across 15 Iowa counties. Names of counties include Linn Wapello Washington Clinton Winneshiek Tama Poweshiek and Keokuk.
