Pope opens synod to assess Vatican II reforms
Pope John Paul II opened an extraordinary two week synod of bishops in St. Peter's Basilica to evaluate Vatican II reforms, seek insights on their effects in local churches, and advise the pope. The event echoed the council's 1962 opening, drawing about 10,000 participants, with Cardinals and bishops in white and gold.
