Simpson Wins Iowa Conference Football Title In 1968

Simpson College ends a 20 year drought by clinching the Iowa Conference football crown. Joe Blake passes for 1118 yards and seven touchdowns, while Bernie Peeters of Luther leads the conference with 879 rushing yards and 80 points. Tom Zachery of Wartburg tops punting at 38.4 yards. Highlights include a 68 yard run by Bruce Joslyn and a 90 yard punt return by Dan Koch.

Cards Trade Washburn for Reds pitcher Culver

St. Louis sent right hander Ray Washburn to Cincinnati for George Culver in a hot stove swap. Washburn, 31, split time as starter and reliever in 1969 with a 10-13 record and 3.18 ERA over 215 innings. Culver, 26, had a 5-7 mark with a 4.28 ERA in 101 innings after missing time with hepatitis. Culver once threw a 20 no hitter in 1968. Washburn owns a no hit game as well.

Kilmer Named NF Offensive Player of the Week

Saints quarterback Bill Kilmer threw six touchdown passes to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals. Charley Johnson also threw six for the Cardinals, but Kilmer earned the weekly honor for lifting New Orleans to their first victory as protection and receivers opened up. Saints coach Tom Fears praised Kilmer's accuracy with time to throw.

Nicklaus credits diet for mental edge and recent wins

Jack Nicklaus credits a weight loss of 20 pounds on a diet for boosting his mental discipline more than his physical condition. He says the diet helped him regain form after a slump, leading to a Sahara victory in Las Vegas and a sudden-death win at the Kaiser International in Napa.

Cardinals Name Wood To Assist Broadcasts

St Louis Cardinals announce Jim Wood will assist Jack Buck on next season's broadcasts. Wood is a longtime major league announcer, most recently with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 11 years, and previously worked for the Giants and Yankees. He is a Missouri native with early career starts in Mason City Iowa and stations in Quincy Illinois and Atlanta Georgia.
