Cedar Rapids voters elected Donald Canney mayor with 15 051 votes to Gerald Ovels 6 953. In Tipton the mayoral race was decided by a single vote. Jack Spear won with 200 votes to LaForest Jedlicka 199. Jedlicka did not seek the post and has not requested a recount, offering to serve if elected. Other elections were uncontested.

36 Aboard Yacht Foundering in Intense offshore storm

A Liberian registered tanker SS Keo carrying 36 crew and fuel oil split in half and began sinking 120 miles southeast of Nantucket in a fierce storm. A nearby yacht Whisper with five or six aboard was breaking up in the same area. Coast Guard reports most Keo crew took refuge on the stern as aircraft, helicopters, surface ships and two British vessels converge. Conditions are dire with 16-20 ft seas and 50-60 knot winds as rescue efforts rush to the scene.

UCS Drive Hits Record Short of Goal

United Community Services campaign in Cedar Rapids reports $1,018,113 raised toward a $1,050,000 goal, 97 percent, with 774 accounts unreported last year. Henry Madden says extra outreach and final calls are needed to cover an $8,000 shortfall before Friday noon report. The drive will be audited Thursday night and a full update given at the YMCA meeting.
