Preservation Mindset Keeps Cedar Rapids Brick Streets
Wayne Murdock, Cedar Rapids streets commissioner, says brick streets are a small but historic part of the city’s 600 miles of roads and will be preserved unless major structural or drainage problems arise. The city traces brick streets to before the 1940s with a few remaining blocks in every quadrant, and past debates over overlay or relaying on 13th Street prompted study of costs and potential relaying. There are about 25 blocks of brick streets left in Marion.
