Iowan WWII Hero Survives War’s Haunting Liberating Gunskirchen
John Gualtier, 91, of Vinton, helped liberate Gunskirchen Lager in Austria on May 4, 1945 as a 19-year-old combat medic with the 71st Infantry Division. He recalls the rotting smells, emaciated survivors, and bodies as he cared for victims and later battled PTSD. Gualtier now shares his story in public programs and volunteers with the VA Iowa City, with a documentary in the works by Brent Watkins.
