Bert Yancey held calm under pressure in a tense finish at the Atlanta Classic, sinking three clutch putts to win and claim a $23,000 payout. The former West Point cadet overcame nerves to secure victory in a tight final round.
First Biggie Bert Yancey of Tallahassee Florida beat Bruce Devlin of Australia in a sudden-death playoff to capture the Atlanta Classic and its $23 000 prize. Yancey birdied the 18th twice in regulation then sank a seven foot birdie on the second playoff hole to seal the victory.
Keystone and Valley teams clash as top contenders in the league race. Fatrtay Hownall and Watkins mysterious matchups headline the card with Pala and Norway noted among key players. Williamsbura referenced as a venue or team anchor in the day's lineup.
Keystone defeated Amana 14 to 0 as Denny Selk launched a three run homer in the fifth inning. Keith Junge and Selk propelled Keystone while Funge added two doubles and a single in four at bats. Newhall opened with a 1 27 over Watkins, piling 16 hits. Brian Koalik of Coe posted four hits in five trips, Streibner went 3 for 5. Norway beat Palo 15 2 for its first win, and Fairfax improved to 1 1 with a 4 2 victory over Marino, Jesse Schulte homering and Ferguson tripling.
TROSPECT Ky AP Mickey Wright claimed the Bluegrass Invitational title, earning 2925 amid a career that has seen 250000 in winnings over 11 years. Wright defeated Betsy Rawls of Spartansburg DC in a dramatic playoff after 54 holes to finish even par 216.
Dale Jones of Center Point earned two firsts and one second at the Southeast Iowa Retrievers Club trials held at Otter Creek marsh near here on Sunday. His King won the open and Kinger took the hunter's special as well as second in the puppy stakes. The SEIRC will sponsor another dog trial on Sunday, June 4, at the Otter Creek marsh.
Bill McVey posted a low net score of 4381 Sunday to win the Squaw Creek meet. The event crowned McVey as overall champion in a tight field with strong performances from local golfers.
In the Squaw Creek Men’s Golf Assn tournament Wilson and Taft led a Peoria event with high net honors going to Harry. Ward split net matches with a 105 2184 score while Dick Morton won the ninth grade action. Taft captured the 219 72 and Stan Hotte won eighth grade high gross with 128 52 76 last Friday in junior high tennis.

Darrell Lindsay a Cedar Rapids junior and Mike Tweedy a Oelwein freshman were named May Players of the Month at Upper Town College. Lindsay led the Peacock baseball team in RBIs with four and home runs with five, posting a .924 fielding average with five errors in 60 chances. Tweedy won the Cornel Relays triple jump at 42 feet and set a 42 10 triple jump record at the Iowa conference relays, later recording a 44-3 best at the Iowa conference meet while also competing in long and high jumps. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Tweedy of Oelwein.
Manchester and Coggon each improved to 2-0 in Delaware County baseball with Sunday wins over Delhi and Alburnett. Doug Henderson drove in the Coggon run aboard a two-base hit, while Doug Hankner fanned 16 for Manchester. Dan Sullivan added a two-run double and Mike Hansen an RBI single. Center Point collected two hits and two RBIs from Ron Laricchett, Bob Meyer, and Doug Haars in a win over Hopkinton. The Reformatory Earlville game was rained out.
Cedar Rapids physician Dr H N Polance won high over all with 230 of 250 targets in trapshooting at North Linn Gun Club. He also took doubles with 47. Donna Polance tied for high in 16 yard with 93 of 100, then won shootoff for second. Egeland high in singles, Hartrum won handicap shootoff. Mrs Polance high woman with 188 of 200.
