Judge Rejects Ray Plea for New Trial in King's Case
MEMPHIS UPI Judge Arthur Faquin denied James Earl Ray's request for a new trial after he admitted guilt to the King assassination and accepted a 99 year sentence. Faquin ruled the guilty plea was proper and that Ray waived rights to appeal. Ray claimed lawyer pressure and faulted his counsel, but the judge found sufficient trial minutes support for the plea.

See School Budget Hike Of 1 Percent

35 000 Names Read Clergymen Call Roll of Viet Dead
In Foxboro Massachusetts four clergymen read the 35000 Vietnam war dead names on the town common from 2 p.m. until after dark by flashlight and a 10 inch yellow candle. The vigil honored fallen soldiers with prayers while a small crowd listened and a Polish demonstrator disrupted the ceremony. Memorial day services followed at the American Legion Post 95.

Cedar Rapids carpenters ratify new two year contract
Carpenters Local 30 represents about 600 workers in Linn Jones and Benton counties and ratified a two year contract with a 1.47 percent hourly wage increase raising the base to 6.10 per hour at the end of the term. The vote was 186 to 69 and the union had gone on strike May 1. Sheetmetal workers declined a settlement offer and remain on strike after rejecting a pay plan that would have raised base pay to 14 300 annually after May 1 1971.
