Webster to resign as state GOP chief

DES MOINES (UPI) Ben nett Webster the Republican state chairman for 1% years said Friday he will resign the job because of personal and business pressures. He will submit his resignation today to the State Central Committee in Des Moines and it will take effect when the committee elects a new chairman probably in one month. Webster said his personal situation and business do not allow the time the job requires. He noted a $220 000 debt nearly retired and preparations for the fall elections. He named potential successors and said the central committee will have time to act before the general election. Webster 59 has long been active in GOP affairs in Iowa.

Ray vetoes easing housing inspection law

Governor Robert Ray vetoed a bill that would have made rental housing inspections voluntary for cities. He argued regular inspections keep rental stock safe and sanitary, reduce landlord tenant tensions, especially in low income areas, and that cities would lose enforcement flexibility under the measure. The 1982 bill would have ended regular inspections and required exams only after complaints.
