Proposed tax Cut survives in Senate

The Republican controlled Senate rejected Democratic efforts to repeal or delay the 10 percent personal income tax cut set for July 1983. White House spokesman Larry Speakes said Reagan was lobbying against the move as Democrats pressed a separate plan to raise revenues by about 76 billion dollars over three years to cut deficits, a bid that failed 68-32 with only five Republicans supporting.

Farmer hijacks Philippine Airlines jet demanding coconut levy rise

A farmer armed with a hand grenade hijacked a Philippine Airlines domestic jetliner with 99 aboard Friday. The plane landed in Cebu City where 16 women were released. Negotiations continued as aviation security troops surrounded the aircraft at the runway end.

Thunderstorms spawn funnel clouds in Eastern Iowa

A line of heavy storms produced 17 funnel clouds across Eastern Iowa with three to five on the ground. A tornado touched down at 12 50 p.m. northwest of Tipton, and touchdowns followed near Stanwood and Clarence. No damage was reported.

Tornado Warning Delays School Field Trip and Buses

Storm warnings delayed departure of homeward-bound buses by 15 minutes Thursday afternoon. Ninth grade principal Marc Haack kept Key stone students in the basement at 12:40 p.m. before radio warnings, later cleared by the Benton County Sheriff. Two funnel clouds were observed in Ottumwa with 60 mph winds. hail near Shueyville and widespread thunderstorms hit Cedar Rapids, Ottumwa, and Clarinda. Power outages affected Iowa Electric Light & Power Co. and Cedar Rapids nearby areas.

Worthington water causes odor and taste complaints

Worthington residents report cloudy, foul smelling, stinky water after a 100 percent HUD funded upgrade. The city built a new 150000 gallon tower and 6 to 8 inch mains to replace private wells with nitrate contamination. Mayor Fortman increased chlorine levels as complaints grew.

A national survey finds nearly 90 percent of U S motorists favor stiffer penalties for drunk driving and reveals high rates of self admission to drinking and driving. Of 2650 adults polled, 39 million say they had three or more drinks before driving or rode with a drunk driver in the past six months.
