Cost Of Living In England Keeps Pace With Wage Increase
Iowa City AP report cites Dean Chester A. Phillips of the University of Iowa as saying England’s cost of living rose about 15 percent in the first 18 months of the war while wholesale prices climbed 40 percent. Profits fell from 1938 highs to 1940 levels only two-thirds of earlier values. Phillips notes English prices likely rise faster than American prices, due to unemployment of capital and labor and large inventories restraining U.S. price growth.
