Marion plans Bicentennial July 4 city square program

Marion church groups outline a City Square Celebration for July 4 with five local pastors speaking at 7:30 am at the City Square Park. Speakers include Rev. Joh Huber St. Pauls Lutheran Rev. Jay Miller First Presbyterian Rev. Tom Anthony Marion Christian Rev. John Gallagher St. Josephs Catholic Rev. Lyle Lee Freewill Baptist. Nearby congregations asked to attend after services. A combined choir will open with 120 volunteers recruited.

Two hurt in Marion car-utility pole mishap

A Tuesday crash in the 480 block of Seventh Avenue Marion left two people injured. Mrs Lelda Gram ling, 62, Springville, suffered a dislocated right ankle facial abrasions and possible nose injuries and was treated at SL Luke's hospital in fall condition. Her husband Mason Dale Gram ling, 85, the driver, was treated for injuries and released. Police said no charges were filed.

Iowa Supreme Court Rules Sodomy Law Unconstitutional

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that the state sodomy law violates fundamental rights including privacy, overturning the Ottumwa conviction of Robert E. Pilcher for acts with a barmaid near Ottumwa in April 1974. Justice Mason wrote the majority opinion, noting the law’s overbroad criminal punishment of private consensual acts between adults. Justice Reynoldson dissented, warning of retroactive challenges.

Three Des Moines men plead innocent in murder case

DES MOINES AF three Des Moines men pled innocent in Polk County district court to an open murder charge in the shooting of Eugene Cheatom. Bond set at 100000 each for Robert Braga Donald Gordon and Mis heel Williams. Preliminary hearing set for June 8. Cheatom died from head wounds after being struck by a stray bullet near the north side. Police said a fourth person allegedly took a wallet from Cheatom's body.
