Carter confident on first ballot in Michigan Maryland primaries

Carter said he was absolutely certain to win the Democratic nomination on the first ballot as Michigan and Maryland held their primaries. Ford supporters predicted a reverse of recent defeats in a contest with Reagan. Voter turnout varied with heavy turnout in Grand Rapids and lighter in Detroit amid a 10.2 percent Michigan unemployment rate. Polls showed Carter leading Brown in Maryland with 31 percent to 28 percent, while Brown claimed a separate poll at 35 percent.
