Cedar Rapids Lions Club members conduct their annual sale through Wednesday offering brooms bulbs and plastic bags with proceeds aiding the blind and partially sighted in the Cedar Rapids area. Other briefs note thefts from homes cars and garages and listings for local events and ads across Cedar Rapids Kalona and nearby areas.
Iowa City officials announce the Johnson County Health Council annual meeting Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Montgomery Hall, 4-H Fairground, Highway 218. A reception honors Graham Cameron, director of the county health department, with programmed remarks on New Directions by Frank Fair of Hoover Health Council. A thought for the day quotes Bernard De Voto on pessimism.
Orlie Workman, Democratic candidate for Linn County sheriff, spoke Sunday at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church reiterating several proposed programs including better training and use of special deputies. He answered questions noting deputies routinely patrol paved roads implying safety priorities.
Decorah Luther College will feature alumni as principal speakers at the commencement activities. The Rev. Gerhard E. Frost, class of 1931 and Luther Seminary faculty member, will deliver the 10 a.m. baccalaureate address, while Dr. Helen Miner, 1949 graduate and Gulf Oil Foundation associate, will speak at the 2:30 p.m. ceremony where about 400 BA degrees will be awarded along with honorary degrees to both speakers.
