Thieu Seeks Nixon Summit to Align Vietnam Policy

Saigon President Nguyen Van Thieu called for a summit with President Nixon to coordinate policy on the war. He said the meeting should come soon and travel to Washington could be arranged, amid signals of possible domestic political pressure over Nixon's proposals. A timetable plans replacing about 50 000 American troops with South Vietnamese forces by end of 1969, contingent on Paris talks and battlefield pace.

Harriman calls for pullout of 50,000 U.S. troops

In Washington, Averell Harriman praised President Nixon's Vietnam speech and urged a prompt withdrawal of about 50,000 U.S. troops plus a mutual scaledown of fighting. He said progress at Paris hinges on reduced violence and supported Lodge negotiating a quick mutual halt.

Bristol Boots ends after 4000 U S troops sweep Ruong Ruoung

UPI reports a 4000 man operation Bristol Boots in the Ruong Ruoung valley 48 miles west of Da Nang ended with one North Vietnamese killed in 30 days and two U S soldiers dead. An officer called the effort a failure as troops departed empty handed. The 101st Airborne Division and South Vietnamese infantry were involved.

Fire sinks boat off Tarpon Springs saving 111 aboard

An excursion boat chartered by Mormon youths and families burned and sank about five miles offshore. Eighty youths and four crew fled into the Gulf of Mexico, and 107 passengers and four crew members survived with only three injuries as coast guards, planes, a cutter, and private boats raced to the scene. Survivors used life jackets and rafts, and were rescued within 30 to 45 minutes.

Snipers Active In Troubled City Near Burlington

Sniper fire was reported in Burlington North Carolina about midnight Saturday. A police official said one person was believed injured near city limits close to where a youth was killed Friday amid looting and firebombing. No further details were available.
