A 600-strong helicopter lift reinforced American paratroopers on Hamburger Hill in the A Shau valley as North Vietnamese bunkers held. Casualties rose with 50 Americans and 250 communists killed near the hill since May 11, while Marines report heavy losses near the demilitarized zone.
In Vietnam near Laos, 101st airborne troopers failed a mountain assault led by Lt. Col. Weldon Honeycutt. At least 10 killed and many wounded as bunkers remained visible amid jungle cleared by artillery and air strikes. Honeycutt's code name Blackjack sparked rough morale.
Iowa officials postponed testing of two Interstate 380 alternate routes west of Cedar Rapids because the state has not signed a contract with its consultant. The study, expected to take one to six weeks once begun, was proposed after a March 18 inquiry from the U S Bureau of Public Roads.
