The Transportation Department issued a preliminary finding that 1.9 million Ford Pintos and 30,000 Mercury Bobcats built 1971 to 1976 have potentially deadly fuel system flaws. Tests showed rear end crashes could puncture fuel tanks or detach the filler pipe, causing large leaks and fires. A public hearing is set for June 14 to hear Ford’s views.
