A Des Moines convention will showcase 200 top Iowa school invention entries. Invent Iowa, backed by Invent America Norwest Bank and Rockwell International, will host May 20 21 at Hotel Fort Des Moines. Regional winners from Cedar Rapids Council Bluffs Marshalltown Burlington Elkader and Des Moines advance to the state event.

Solon City Council approved spending six thousand dollars to beautify the 110 year old Main Street Park. The plan calls for landscaping plantings and the removal of one tree with the Park and Recreation Commission urging speedy completion.

Vinton driver charged with vehicular homicide
A 24 year old Vinton man Hoepner was charged with vehicular homicide and drunken driving after a fatal March 19 crash near Van Horne. The court information alleges intoxication and reckless driving led to Mark A. Miner's death. Arraignment set for May 19 in Benton County District Court.

Van tour of Cedar Valley Nature Trail planned
Linn County Conservation Department sponsors a van tour for senior citizens and handicapped persons on Thursday. Vans depart from the trail head in Hiawatha at 8 30 a m for a 13 mile trip to Center Point Depot and back. The 14 hour tour requires advance registration at 398 3505 to help defray costs.

Fayette board approves 6 percent salary hikes
The Fayette County Board of Supervisors approved 6 percent raises for elected county officials. Salary ranges set at 17,200 for supervisors, 28,000 for the county attorney, 24,500 for the treasurer and recorder, and 27,000 for the sheriff.

Linn district court finds multiple assault pleas reduced
In Linn District Court several defendants pleaded guilty to lesser simple assault charges after initial accusations of assault causing bodily injury. Tom F.
