In Gdansk six day strike at Lenin shipyard ends with management broadly agreeing to raise pay by at least 38 dollars a month reinstate fired Solidarity activists and grant amnesty for about 1 000 strikers. Strike committee chair Alojzy Szablewski reports progress and a second meeting planned after Mass.
Vulcan Materials Co of Birmingham Alabama purchases B L Anderson Co a 36 year Cedar Rapids family business. The sale follows board approval at both firms with price undisclosed and 100 to 120 employees affected. Anderson cites positive development for Cedar Rapids and Eastern Iowa and notes Vulcan’s eight divisions and leading role in chemicals and aggregates.
Electronic virus concerns prompt Apple and other experts to urge safe computing practices. Apple security heads work with the CDC to apply epidemiology to tracing Macintosh viruses, as viruses spread via disks and programs. Some are harmless pranks, others cause real damage.
