Pioneering Couples Start Alaskan Trek
MEMPHIS AP Two couples from Tennessee and Arkansas launch a 30 to 40 day Alaska trek in a covered wagon truck. Sam and Martha Browning with Clarence and Harriet Bell aim for Anchorage then Matanuska valley near Palmer. They plan hardy travel with four adults sleeping on and under the truck, carry a year’s food, and a small arsenal as they pursue homesteading and adventure. The Browning family lost a daughter in 1943 and seek restless new life while the Bells seek hunting and fishing opportunities.
