Atalissa School Chief Killed in Car Train Crash
Spencer A. Guiles, about 60, superintendent of the Atalissa public schools, was killed and his wife, the high school principal, was injured when their car collided with a Rock Island freight train at a crossing. Mrs. Guiles was taken to an Iowa City hospital in satisfactory condition. Witness Hal McKillip 17, operating a tractor nearby, said Guiles appeared to drive onto the tracks just ahead of the train. The train struck the left rear of the car, throwing it 45 feet along the rail. Guiles was thrown from the car and his head rested on the rails.
