The American embassy asks Czechoslovakia to explain why three American students were arrested in Wenceslas Square on May Day and held for seven hours. The incident occurred amid protests around the statue of St. Wenceslas, a symbol of resistance to Russian occupation.
In Prague over the weekend three Notre Dame international study program students George White Christopher Ottenweller and Water Kelly were expelled from the country along with three Dutch TV journalists a BBC team and two West German students. The U S embassy said the Americans were not expelled but stayed until visas expired and raised concerns about questioning procedures and language barriers. The episode occurred after a chess game involving a student and fellow participants in a Prague venue seen by witnesses and officials.
Washington AP Mills, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, said a 1969 benefit increase seems unlikely though a boost next year is possible. He questioned financing under Johnson’s 10 percent proposal and noted wage rises alter projections.
