Crop-Share Leases Found Profitable for Landlords

University of Illinois extension economist F J Reiss reports crop share leases yielded higher net rents for landlords from 1960 to 1967. Landlords with 180 259 acres averaged 26 28 or 29 dollars per 100 of production depending on size, while smaller owners earned 22. Livestock shares yielded lower rents except for very small farms, with net rents stabilizing differently between grain and livestock operations. For small acreages, building costs raise per unit production, suggesting mixed leasing or cash rents may be better.
