Falklands warship hit as sub torpedoes strike near coast
The Defence Ministry reported a Falklands cruiser with several torpedoes around 2 p.m. CDT Sunday. The former US warship, the USS Phoenixed as the General Belgrano, was believed severely damaged after being torpedoed southeast of Los Estados Island near Argentina. Britain said the incident occurred just outside the war zone. The 600 foot vessel, once called USS Phoenix, was sold to Argentina in 1951. The submarine, part of a Swiftsure class including Splendid Sceptre and Spartan, reportedly carried 25 Tigerfish torpedoes. The Park Service note on wildlife is unrelated.
