Mexican President Aleman spoke to a joint session in Spanish, warning democracy needs conviction not force, and urging US Mexican unity based on right and justice. He praised wartime cooperation, called for hemispheric resolve, and stressed equal, noncoercive relations between nations.
Washington AP report details ten leaders from AFL and CIO meeting to discuss uniting into a single labor movement of 13.5 million members. The session showcased long history between John L. Lewis and Philip Murray with little optimism for rapid consolidation.
Washington. The Senate War Investigating Committee said President Truman refused to allow a committee representative to search Roosevelt files for documents related to the Saudi Arabia oil inquiry. Chairman Brewster announced a study would determine rights and responsibilities before any further action. Truman provided photocopies of a 1945 letter and memorandum by oil executive James A. Moffett offering to advance 30 million dollars to King Ibn Saud.
Wesley Engquist a 26 year old from Fremont Nebraska who rode 6740 miles in a wheelchair from January to Warm Springs Georgia to seek a cure for infantile paralysis left on crutches Thursday according to the Warm Springs Foundation.
Cedar Rapids council approved retroactive pay raises for city employees effective April 1. Most workers receive $10 cents hourly or about $19 monthly for monthly staff, while police and fire command ranks gain $31 to $50 monthly. One dissenting vote opposed an extra $120 annual raise for City Clerk Maude Krebs.
A 2,500 pound steer rampaged through midtown Manhattan during rush hour injuring three people before police fired 15 shots, killing the animal as it moved from 11th Avenue to 39th Street and into Eighth Avenue. A bystander was wounded by a ricochet.
Eight miners died in an underground explosion at the Spring Hill coal mine near Terre Haute Indiana as they prepared the tunnel for federal inspection. A dynamite blast ignited coal dust, filling a 2000 foot passage with gas and smoke. three survivors escaped from near the elevator shaft after signaling rescuers. Dense smoke delayed rescue efforts for hours while crews searched the shaft.
Presidents Truman and Alemán announced additional U.S. credits to Mexico and a stabilization of the peso dollar exchange rate. The credits will fund multiple projects proposed to the Export-Import Bank to spur Mexico’s economy.
The House approved by 127 to 48 a measure to kill virtually all government controls on building materials and construction. Debates covered rent controls extending to December 31 and a push to rewrite the housing rent bill. Senate leaders favored continuing the current rent program through June 30, 1948, with local committees given more power to set increases.
A tornado swept through northeast Arkansas and adjacent Missouri causing extensive property damage with two deaths reported. It was the second twister to hit the area that week.

The Dun and Bradstreet weekly food price index fell again in the week ended last Tuesday though the drop was smaller. The index stood at $6.02, down from $6.06 the prior week and $4.19 a year ago, marking the lowest since Oct 8 1946. Six commodities rose while 14 fell.

Roy W. Waltz a 30 year old refrigeration engineer aboard the S S Sea Serpent leaped from his ship into San Francisco Bay seeking a night of fun. He floated to a rocky shore near Alcatraz where guards spotted him in underwear and opened fire with guns before he was identified and returned to the Sea Serpent. Waltz blamed faulty refrigeration changes for his act and said he is quitting life at sea after the incident.

About 16 500 AFL building trades workers walked out in Detroit Thursday halting housing and commercial projects. Carpenters led a 9 000 strong walkout joined by 4 000 painters 3 000 laborers and 500 cement finishers seeking wage increases from 25 to 12 percent and higher hourly rates, with carpenters aiming for substantial raises.
About 14,000 CIO United Steelworkers walked out at Inland Steel Company as contract talks failed at midnight. Production halted at the Indiana Harbor plant in East Chicago and the Chicago Heights facility while negotiators worked through the night over fringe issues and contract language.
Collins Radio Company announced a 50 percent layoff of production employees with reductions in other departments to follow by month end. President Arthur Collins was unavailable for comment. a management spokesman cited completion of most government contracts by May 31 as the reason. Some workers may be recalled after several months as the firm maintains its commercial and government research programs and a new building project proceeds in about 30 days.
Early trout season opened in Strawberry Point with anglers flooding the area. By noon many had secured their limits as crowds filled the Franklin hotel and locals opened private rooms. Backbone state park cabins were prepared and in demand. One angler, Kane of Cedar Rapids, reported a string of eight trout.
In South Bear creek Thursday morning Arnold Williams reported five bow trout ranging 12 to 15 inches and one German Brown of 18 inches. Catches were numerous though not unusually large.
An inch thick steel plate slid from a freight gondola onto two Pennsylvania Express coaches near Huntington, killing four, including three soldiers, and injuring at least 43. The crash halted traffic for hours as emergency crews cleared wreckage.
Damp eastern Iowa weather gave way to a forecast of clear skies and cooler temperatures tonight. Cedar Rapids recorded 6.17 inches of rain for April with 0.96 more in the area this morning. The 2:30 p.m. temperature reached 62 after Wednesday’s 80 high, with 7 p.m. at 57 and 9 a.m. around 49.
