Food Chains Widen Beef Margins Report
UPI reports an agriculture department summary will show February farm to retail margins for beef rising for a second month. Tony Dechant of the National Farmers Union calls for investigation of profit margins among chains and processors. Sources say retail beef prices and margins increased while farm and wholesale costs moved differently. Dechant argues chains absorb and pass through profits, urging scrutiny of price structures.

Government Will Publish New Corporate Farm Study
Washington reports the Agriculture Department plans a revised version of the controversial study on corporate involvement in farming. The 1968-69 survey had estimated about 1 percent of commercial farms were corporate owned, with debates over family ownership and state variations. The followup, likely out by 1973, is expected to largely align with prior figures though census data through 1989 suggests higher counts, sparking ongoing debate about corporate influence in U.S. agriculture.

End of Government Grain Sales Demanded by NFO
The National Farmers Organization urged USDA to halt all grain sales for domestic and export use until prices exceed production costs. NFO President Oren Stailey said CCC dumped about 100 million bushels into export markets and released 42 million more in other grains, claiming policy harms farmers more than dock strikes. NFC headquarters said farmers must rely on their own strength to counter the current cheap grain policy.
