City Seeks Unified Dog License Policy Streamlining

Middleman's Price Spread Rises 2.5 Percent
Washington AP report shows middleman price spreads for a market basket of grocery items rising 2.5 percent in February while the farmer's share grew 0.9 percent. The full basket cost $1,297 for the year, up $23 from January, with farm value at $516 and middlemen at $781. Farmers received 39.7 cents of every consumer dollar, down from 40.1 cents in January.

Powell, Wellman pioneer funeral director dies at 90
Louis Jared Powell 90 of Wellman died Monday in an Iowa City hospital. A South English hardware dealer turned funeral director, he opened a Powell furniture store in 1946 and owned Bidwell funeral home after 1943. Survived by wife Ida, children John Louis Richard and others, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Services Thursday 10:30 a.m. at Mennonite church. Burial in Wellman Mennonite Cemetery. City To Act Wednesday On Water Rate Benefits
Cedar Rapids city council will consider a first reading to eliminate the minimum water rate for eligible elderly residents. Eligible 65 plus households with income under 4200 will pay only for water used, replacing the current 7.27 two month minimum based on 500 gallons monthly. No Jurisdiction Due To Amount Case Is Dropped
Federal Judge Edward McManus dismissed a civil suit by Gerald Peterson against Issadore Nadder for lack of jurisdiction since the claim of 6035 dollars did not meet the federal court threshold. Peterson, an inmate at Leavenworth, sought damages for wrongful conversion of a 1967 car and had requested appointed counsel in 1971, a request the judge initially refused but was overruled on appeal by the Eighth Circuit in St Louis.
